Noun

 

Definition: a noun is a naming word. So, the name of person, animal, place or object which exists all around us or beyond us is called noun.

For example: see the bolded and italic words of the examples below.

Ex: [a] Mitu and Nidhi always quarrel with each other. [name of human being]

Ex: [b] the Padma, the Meghna and the Jamuna are very popular river in Bangladesh. [name of place]

Ex: [c] The Royal Bengal Tiger is very dangerous animal. [name of animal]

Ex: [d] there are some tables and chairs in this room. [name of object]

 

Classification of noun

There are various opinion about the classification of noun. Firstly, noun can be divided in to two kinds. Such as, 1 Concrete noun  “can be touched by our body organs”abstract noun  “can not be touched by our body parts”.

These gramarians  also divided Concrete noun in to four classes. Such as,

[a] proper noun [b] common noun [c] collective noun [d] material noun.

 

Secondly, some grammarian think that noun is of five types. Such as,

[a] proper noun [b] common noun [c] collective noun [d] material noun [e] abstract noun.

 

Thirdly, some say that noun is of two classes according to visibility and invisibility. Such as, [a] proper [a] Visible noun [b] invisible noun. according to them, visible noun is also four types like Concrete noun. Such as, [a] Proper noun [b] common noun [c] collective noun [d] material noun. They have mainly recognized the Abstract noun as the Invisible noun.

 

Fourthly, some other grammarians have classified noun in to two types according to the number. Such as, [a] Countable noun “which can be counted in numerically”. [b] Uncountable noun “which can not be counted numerically”.

 

Finally, considering all the above mentioned opinions we can conclude saying that noun is mainly divided in to five types. Such as,

[a] proper noun [b] common noun [c] collective noun [d] material noun [e] abstract noun.

But in the context of number we can classify noun in to two classes. Such as, [a] Countable noun [b] Uncountable noun.

Even Countable noun can also be divided in to two kinds. Such as, [a] Singular noun [b] Plural noun.

 

The types of noun are discussed below with bolded and italicized examples.

Proper noun: “a proper noun refers to a particular name of place, object, human being, animal and so on. It’s a name of individualization and personalization. It actually expresses the personal identification of a thing, object, person, animal and place ETC.”

Ex: [e] Mun has only one sister. [a particular name of a person]

Ex: [f] India is a large country with a large population. [name of a particular place]

Ex: [g] Nabo has been suffering from diarrhea. [a particular name of a disease]

Ex: [h] Tuntuni is a little bird. [name of a particular bird]

 

Common noun: “a common noun is the general name of thing, person, place, animal ETC. it is mainly generalization of  objects, things, being,, places. Suppose, “man”is the general name of all individual persons.”

Ex: [i] the Padma is a river. [general name ofsome water bodies]

Ex: [j] The USa the UK and the UaE are very rich country. [general name of states]

eX: [k] Tuhin is a clever girl.[general name of female kids]

ex: [q] a cow is a useful animal but a dog is very great animal. [general name of two kinds of animal of beast]

collective noun: “a collective noun is a group or class of things, beings, animals, places. “it’s a name of group or class]. “a noun or name which expresses a group or class altogether is called collective noun.”.

ex: [l] Bangladeshi people like to live in a family.

Ex: [m] the picnic committee was formed yesterday.

Ex: [n] the army was sent to UN piece mission last week.

Ex: [o] the jury has agreed in their opinion about the capital punishment of Kader Molla.

Ex: [p] firstly, the jury were divided in their opinion about the capital punishment of Kader Molla.

 

Material noun: “a material noun is a name of element or substance which can not be counted numerically.” “a material noun is such a word which is only measured by weight.”

Ex: [q] gold is a precious metal.

Ex: [r] milk is very essential to our health.

 

Abstract noun: “an abstract noun is the name of quality which is untouchable and invisible.”

Ex: [s] honesty is a great virtue of human being.

Ex: [t] education is the backbone of a nation.

Ex: [u] the quality of rice is fine in Barishal.

Ex: [v] a think of beauty is joy for ever.
